By default, Demandbase provides a Sales Engagement vs. Marketing Engagement segment to help you get started. This segment groups activities into sales and marketing engagement, providing key insights at both the account and person levels. You can filter and analyze data for targeted outreach and customize to ensure accurate tracking and reporting.
Using this segment, you can:
- Evaluate Sales Performance: Track engagement with sales efforts.
- Gauge Marketing Impact: Measure marketing engagement.
- Analyze Engagement Patterns: Identify shifts in engagement over time to optimize strategies.
- Set Up Alerts for Targeted Outreach: Flag accounts with high marketing engagement but low sales touches.
- Enhance Sales & Marketing Alignment: Use insights to improve collaboration, outreach, and conversions.
Segment Grouping
The Sales Engagement vs. Marketing Engagement segment categorizes activities into the following groups:
- Sales Engagement: Activity type that is a task, event, inbound email, meeting attendance, open sales email, or click sales email.
- Marketing Engagement: Activity type that is NOT a task, event, inbound email, meeting attendance, open sales email, or click sales email.
Important: To ensure accurate tracking, verify that activities are correctly reflected in the segment groups. Identify any missing or unnecessary activities and edit the segment as needed. See Edit Segment.
Segment and Standard Demandbase Calculated Fields
The Sales Engagement vs. Marketing Engagement segment powers the following standard calculated fields in Demandbase. These fields provide insights into sales and marketing activities at both the Account and Person levels.
Important: For these standard calculated fields, you must first assign Engagement Minutes to the activities. The field then looks at activities that meet the criteria within the segment. See Set Up Engagement Minutes for Activities.

Use Segment as a Selector
You can use the Sales Engagement vs. Marketing Engagement segment as a selector for lists, filters, etc.
In the selector module, add the Sales Engagement vs. Marketing Engagement activity selector. In the Value box, select Sales Engagement or Marketing Engagement. You can also set the Activity Date time period.
Edit Segment
Users with permissions can edit the Sales Engagement vs. Marketing Engagement segment.
- From the left navigation bar, go to Database > Activities > Activity Segment.
- Click Sales Engagement vs. Marketing Engagement segment.
Tip: The segment Owner is labeled as "System". - Make edits and click Save. See Create and Manage Segments.
