How to Spoof Test IP Addresses in Chrome

Updated:

Many of Demandbase's modules rely on data returned from the Demandbase IP API. It is sometimes necessary to test that your Demandbase integration is working properly with different IP addresses. Fortunately, there are a couple third-party browser tools that make testing with different IP addresses easy. This is otherwise known as Spoofing.

For Google Chrome, we recommend the ModHeader extension. Add the ModHeader extension to Chrome at this link:

  • After the extension has been added, you will see a blue icon in the top right corner of your browser. Click the icon and then click the "+" icon and select "Request Header"

  • In the Name input field, enter X-Forwarded-For, as seen below.
  • In the Value input field, enter the IP address you would like to test. In the example below, we have added an IP address from General Electric. In the Comment input field, add a brief description of the IP.
  • The IP address read by the websites you visit will be the IP of the active tab in ModHeader (so long as a checkmark is next the header), even after you click back to the page and ModHeader is hidden.

To confirm you're spoofing successfully, use these steps to see which IP address is being sent to the Demandbase API:

1. Open the webpage in a Chrome Incognito window.
2. Open the JavaScript console within Chrome (Ctrl + Shift + J on Windows or Cmd + Opt + J on Mac).
3. Type window.Demandbase.IP.CompanyProfile.ip, then hit Enter. You should see something like this:

How to Spoof in Incognito Mode

Sometimes, your browser's cache and/or cookies prevent your content from changing when you're testing personalized content by spoofing IP addresses. In this situation, you will have to spoof in Incognito mode. To activate the ModHeader extension above in Incognito mode, you can navigate to chrome://extensions/ in your browser and check the Allow in incognito checkbox:

Once this has been activated, you may then open an Incognito window and try your spoofing again.
